Heron Park- Native Planting 2026

Saturday 4 July 2026, 10:00am - 12:30pm

In 2025 we began working with local residents who live next to this park in Waterview to control pest plants, trap predators and add plant species to the existing native vegetation. This year we’re continuing that mahi with an additional planting. We’d love you to come along and join us!

Please make sure you register here so we know how much gear and catering to bring!

Bring: Water bottle, sunhat/cap.

Wear: Sturdy closed footwear with good grip (boots ideal).

Urban Ark will provide:

-Spades and gloves (but feel free to bring your own).

-Refreshments when the mahi is done.

This project is generously supported by Albert-Eden Local Board. Thank-you!

The Avenue Reserve - Native Planting Event

Friday 10 July 2026, 1:00pm - 3:30pm

We’re transforming this under-utilised patch of grass into a future habitat area for native wildlife, which will provide environmental education opportunities for local schools while leaving some open space for recreation.

The Matariki constallation rises in mid winter marking the Māori new year and signalling time for soil preparation and planting native trees (te whakato rākau), so we’ve chosen Matariki as a time to bring the local community together for this native planting event.

This project is supported by Puketāpapa Local Board, Halsey Drive School and Transpower’s Community Care Fund which assists communities affected by Transpower’s overhead lines and substations by investing in local projects that add value and long-term benefits to those communities.

Please make sure you register here - so we know how much gear and catering to bring!

Bring: Water bottle, sunhat/cap.

Wear: Sturdy closed footwear with good grip (boots ideal).

Urban Ark will provide:

-Spades and gloves (but feel free to bring your own).

-Refreshments when the mahi is done.

FYI some grass will be sprayed by contractors to prepare the site, so please don’t worry if you see dead grass prior to the planting date - it’s all for a good cause.

Second Sunday Weeders 2026 July: Te Mahurehure Marae

Sunday 12 July 2026, 9:00am - 11:00am

This month, Pt Chev’s Second Sunday Weeders will be working along the banks of Waitītiko / Meola Creek at Te Mahurehure Marae. Pt Chev’s St Francis School and Whitebait Connection collaborated on a streamside planting at the marae last May and the weeders did some ‘releasing’ 6 mnths back. The plan is to revisit those plants and gently free them from any weeds which are trying to take over. This will give the plants a better chance of surviving this winter. We hope that as the plants mature they will provide breeding habitat for inanga (whitebait) here at the tidal limit of the awa.

  • Meet outside Te Mahurehure Marae at 65 Premier Avenue, Point Chevalier
  • Bring your favourite gardening gloves and secatuers if you have them, but we’ll also have spare gear you can borrow.
  • If you don’t have two hours to spare, but drop in for as long as you can manage.

Sometimes there is cake, often there is good chat, and always there are weeds to pull.

Second Sunday Weeders 2026 July: Motions Rd Reserve

Sunday 12 July 2026, 9:00am - 11:00am

This month, Pt Chev’s Second Sunday Weeders will be back at Motions Reserve, an area where we did some “species enrichment” last year and some ‘releasing’ in spring. The plan is to revisit those plants and gently free them from any weeds which are trying to take over. This will give the plants a better chance of surviving the winter and contributing to enhanced biodiversity of the ngahere in years to come. The birds will love the year-round food supply.

  • Meet on the grass beside the trap crossing outside Auckland Zoo (136 Motions Rd)

Urban Ark Speaker Series: BirdCare Aotearoa

Thursday 16 July 2026, 6:15pm - 7:30pm

We had a packed house for our last guest talk, so sign up quickly if you’d like to attend our forthcoming presentation by Dr Rashi Parker - General Manager at BirdCare Aotearoa.

This excellent charity run a native bird hospital and have noted an increasing number of life-threatening cases where birds have collided with (increasingly tall) buildings, been dazzled by night lights, or contracted contagious, waterborne diseases (e.g., Avian Botulism). We are posing the question ‘How can our expanding city create greater protection for native birds where habitat areas and human infrastructure meet?’ Dr Parker’s expertise will help us and our supporters to gain a better understanding the role city residents and urban planners can play in creating a more manu-friendly Tāmaki Makaurau.

Melville Park - Native Planting 2026

Wednesday 22 July 2026, 1:00pm - 3:00pm

We’re working to restore a small (and currently rather weedy) hidden part of Melville Park in Epsom. The plan is to replace pest plants with native plant species and provide a wider range of habitat options for native wildlife. We’ve carefully selected plant species which are suitable for the area, which contains patches of critically endangered ‘lava rock forest’. We’d love you to join us!

This project is generously supported by Albert-Eden Local Board. Thank-you!

Coyle Park - Native Planting 2026

Saturday 25 July 2026, 10:00am - 12:30pm

We’ve been working to control pest plants at this rather weedy site tucked away above Rangi-mata-rau (Point Chev Beach) and now we’re ready to add suitable coastal native plant species to the exisiting vegetation to provide a wider range of habitat options for native wildlife. We’d love you to join us!
