Sadly, we don’t commonly see korimako (Anthornis melanura) in most of suburban Auckland. Even more sadly we don’t get to hear those mellifluous tones.
Head over to Rangitoto, Motutapu and Waiheke, or into the Hunua Ranges, and you’ll hear them ringing out through the trees. In recent years there have been increasing reports of observations in inner Auckland but we’d love them to be way more common. You can help in all the usual ways: trap pest animals, remove pest plants and plant natives in your garden, particularly kōwhai.
