Other ways you can help

Heading out in all weathers to check traps or pull weeds isn’t everyone’s idea of a fun time. Fortunately there are all sorts of ways you can volunteer for your local group (or for Urban Ark – Manawa Taiao), from managing our social media presence to designing brochures and mending damaged traps. See our list below.

The easiest way to express your interest is to fill out our Register form. There are quite a few questions but you don’t have to answer them all. We’ll be in touch as soon as possible.

Ways you can help

The big picture stuff

  • Write or update policies
  • Write or update procedures manual
  • Carry out H&S audit
  • Help run pest monitoring
  • Help run biodiversity monitoring

The detail stuff

  • Data input (trap catches, bird counts, etc)
  • Proof-reading newsletters
  • Website maintenance, checking links, making sure references up to date etc
  • Research funding opportunities and
  • Write funding applications
  • Be on call to solve IT issues

The social stuff

  • Manage Facebook page
  • Social media skills
  • Branding advice
  • Marketing
  • Organise social events for Urban Ark
  • Organise speakers for group events.
  • Talk to local service clubs and similar groups on our behalf
  • Approach businesses to support Urban Ark with prizes etc
  • Make phone calls to volunteers after an event (be volunteer manager)

The creative stuff

  • Web design
  • Graphic design and layout (brochures etc)
  • Writing articles for the news section of the website
  • Photography, birds, other animals, staff headshots, groups in action
  • Designing infographics to explain key metrics
  • Design surveys or evaluation tools for Urban Ark and its groups
  • Analyse survey findings and prepare report
  • Design a T-shirt to sell as a fundraiser
  • Design a welcome kit for volunteers
  • Design induction kit for volunteers

The physical stuff

  • Brochure distribution (house to house)
  • Build wētā motels
  • Build rat tunnels
  • Clean and maintain DOC 150 & 200 traps, Trapinator etc
  • Provide or prepare food for events
