This month, Pt Chev’s Second Sunday Weeders will be working along the banks of Waitītiko / Meola Creek at Te Mahurehure Marae. Pt Chev’s St Francis School and Whitebait Connection collaborated on a streamside planting at the marae last May and the weeders did some ‘releasing’ 8 months back. The plan is to revisit those plants and gently free them from any weeds which are trying to take over. This will give the plants a better chance of surviving this winter. We hope that as the plants mature they will provide breeding habitat for inanga (whitebait) here at the tidal limit of the awa.

• Meet outside Te Mahurehure Marae at 65 Premier Avenue, Point Chevalier
• Bring your favourite gardening gloves and secatuers if you have them, but we’ll also have spare gear you can borrow.
• If you don’t have two hours to spare, but drop in for as long as you can manage.

Sometimes there is cake, often there is good chat, and always there are weeds to pull.

Join us and Earth Action Trust in giving Waterview Glades a glow up! This reserve backs right onto Te Auaunga / Oakley Creek, and together we can help stop litter from reaching this precious awa (stream).

Ngā Ringa o Te Auaunga / Friends of Oakley Creek have spent years restoring the mauri (life force) of Te Auaunga — removing invasive weeds, reducing predators, and planting native trees along the waterway. Now we’re teaming up to tackle the rubbish that still finds its way into the awa and affects water quality.

After the clean up, Earth Action Trust will guide us through sorting the waste so we can recycle as much as possible. We’ll also get a clearer picture of what types of litter show up most often — and how we can stop these items entering the environment in the first place.

Join us for a community planting day as we team up with Ngā Ringa o Te Auaunga / Friends of Oakley Creek to support their restoration efforts along Auckland’s longest stream!

We’ll be planting in Alan Wood Reserve, right beside the awa (stream). This area is prone to flooding, so the plants we put in the ground will help strengthen the stream banks, reduce erosion, and stop excess sediment from washing into the waterway.

These native plants also act like natural filters. They soak up nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus that wash off our streets during rain. Without plants to capture them, these nutrients can enter the awa and harm the native creatures that live there, as well as reduce overall water quality.

Flooding is a natural process and it isn’t going anywhere. It is also becoming more frequent with changes in climate. However, we can make space for water and work towards restoring the balance between people and water.

Recreating natural habitats that allow water to breathe or flow as it should do are an important step in this and in building our overall flood resilience.

We run weeding bees with keen community volunteers in local parks on the third Wednesday of each month.

This month we’ll be back at our lovely seaside planting site at Coyle Park in Point Chev. The aim is to take out the remaining invasive pest plants and add more mulch, which will hold moisture to give our native seedlings the best chance of survival over the coming summer. It will be fun, social and gratifying.

Don’t worry if you’re a newbie, we’ll have experts on hand to teach you how to tell your ecological weeds from your natives.

Urban Ark will provide:

-Tools and gloves (but feel free to bring your own).

-Refreshments when the mahi is done.

Urban Ark are teaming up with the Hawke Sea Scouts (Cox’s Bay) to give Ōpoutūkeha / Cox’s Creek some love. Come help us clean up litter from in and around the mangroves at the edge of the reserve — this rubbish washes straight into the awa (stream) and then out to the ocean.

Last year the Scouts tackled the mangroves and found (quite literally) shopping‑trolley loads of litter hidden in there. By removing this pollution they helped protect and restore some of the mauri (life force) of Cox’s Creek. We want to help continue this good mahi into the future.

Further upstream, several community groups are also working to enhance the mauri of the awa and its catchment — removing invasive weeds and predators, and planting native trees along overland flow paths. We will talk about how all of this awesome mahi is helping make the catchment more Flood Ready…

After the clean up we will head to ‘The Ship’ where the scouts have generously agreed to provide some kai and refreshments for us!
