Guided rock forest walk - Withiel-Thomas reserve
Saturday 19 March 2022, 10:00am - 11:15am
Led by - Sel Arbuckle
Join rock forest expert and local historian Sel Arbuckle for a guided walk through one of Auckland’s most unique ecosystems. ‘Rock forest’ once covered large parts of the Auckland volcanic lava field, but is now classified as ‘critically endangered’. Withiel-Thomas reserve is one of only a few remaining fragments which collectively form a ‘Significant Ecological Area’ on the eastern side of Maungawhau/Mt Eden. You will see gnarled trees which send roots twisting among volcanic boulders and hear the story of the historic character who tended the forest and gifted it to the city of Auckland.
This event is supported by Urban Ark - Manawa Taio and representative Phil Simpson will be on hand to discuss ways the public can help with the conservation of native biodiversity in the urban environment.
