Urban Ark is holding an ‘all-group’ meeting on Thursday 6 October (6.30-8.30pm) at the Gribblehirst Hub in Gribblehirst Park (5 Cabbage Tree Swamp Lane; see map below).
The meeting is mainly for group leaders. Please [Enable JavaScript to view protected content] if you’re coming and let us know if you’d like to invite anyone else from your group.
The focus of the evening is to discuss Communications. There will be an opportunity to contribute to discussions around:
If the weather is fine enough we’ll hold the meeting outdoors. Otherwise we’ll be indoors with plenty of ventilation.
We’ll also be running our peanut butter refillery: bring a container and we’ll fill it up with bait free of charge.

Pt Chevalier’s Walmer Reserve hasn’t seen much weeding of late, but a bunch of neighbours are keen to give it some TLC.
If you can spare an hour or so, come down at 10.30am on Saturday 8 October. Meet on the grass beside 76 Moa Road and bring gloves, spades, loppers, whatever you’ve got.
The flax in the reserve is used by the harakeke kahui weaving collective, so the whole park is a pesticide and poison-free zone. This means we’ll be removing weeds by hand. We’ll be going for:
There is also a fair bit of gorse and blackberry, so if you’re up for a challenge, bring your leather gloves and protective clothing.
We hope to run follow-up weeding bees in the coming months.

Our very popular 5 week series of two-hour workshops covers some of the equipment found in our wood workshop. It’s suitable for novices or anyone wishing to upskill, particularly in power-tools and machinery. If you are new to woodworking, attending this workshop is a requirement of our Membership.
Each session will offer the chance to use different tools and machinery in a supportive, friendly setting (4–6 trainees) while doing good for the community building items for our partner, Urban Ark – Manawa Taiao.
All workshop PPE (eye, ear, respiratory protection) will be available but you are welcome to bring your own.
Week 1 (Sat 8 Oct) Sexy saws… and planing: includes timber basics, marking measuring, hand-saws, planing, and cutting with a hand saw.
Week 2 (Sat 15 Oct) Feel the power includes safety and power-tools such as skill/circular saws, drop saws and bench saws.
Week 3 (Sat 29 Oct) Screw it includes drills, bits and drilling and presses plus nails, screws and screwing.
Week 4 (Sat 5 Nov) Grind it baby working with metal including cutting and grinding.
Week 5 (Sat 12 Nov) Joint time includes assembling work, jigs, quality control, joints, tool kits (if time).
Sarah Murray is a highly qualified builder, furniture maker, educator and mentor with over 30 years experience working in these industries. She is passionate about supporting women to be confident with power tools, to do jobs around their homes, make things from wood, or enter the building industry, if that desire is there.

After a Covid19-induced hiatus last year, hopes are high that this year’s event will go ahead on Saturday 29 October (9am–3pm) in the Sandringham shops around the junction of Sandringham Rd and Calgary St.
Pest Free Sandringham and Urban Ark will be there on the day focusing on improving the area’s native biodiversity. We’ll be updating this page as plans take shape.
Sandringham Festival is a fun, family event created by the Sandringham Business Association to highlight the shops in the area and bring the community together. Naturally, being Sandringham, there is plenty of delicious food on offer, as well as entertainment and a variety of stalls. We hope to have a real community feel to the Sandringham Festival this year, with lots of free fun activities on offer, and performances from local school groups. We’d love to see you there!

Inspiring young people to love their local environment is key in our fight to save the planet. What part can storytelling, art and citizen science play?
Come down to the Meola Reef mangroves and learn about how a beautifully-illustrated book triggered a passionate response from the youngest students of a local school. From creativity in the classroom to amazing and far-reaching citizen science on the mudflats, these tamariki - tomorrow’s leaders - are showing the way.
Join author Glenda Kane, artist Lisa Allen and Grey Lynn School teacher Jody Hayes as they share their insights surrounded by the environment in which the creative seed has been planted.
Draw a germinating mangrove propagule, turn over a rock to discover what lies beneath, or just enjoy a different perspective beside the Waitematā.

Where Te Tokaroa / Meola Reef. Meet in the small clearing about 100m in from Meola Road, accessed along a path from beside the bus stop opposite the Meola Road entrance to MOTAT Aviation Section. Look out for the Urban Ark- Manawa Taiao flag at the entrance and walk along the path.

Freeland Reserve, at the headwaters of the Stoddard Road Tributary in the upper catchment, Mt Roskill, has recently been upgraded as part of the stormwater works for the Kainga Ora housing development that is taking place there.
This is an opportunity for you to explore the reserve with its new wetland, pathways, plantings and stunning artwork, and to join in with the celebrations with live music, craft workshops, face painting and more.
We will have an information stall at the event, so if you are going do drop in for a catch up.
Access is via Freeland Avenue, Kallu Crescent or Balfron Avenue.
