Second Sunday Weeders: Te Mahurehure Marae
Sunday 4 May 2025, 9:00am - 11:00am
The eagle-eyed among you will have noticed that Sunday 4 May is not the second Sunday of the month. We’re making an exception to our usual schedule this month so that we can do some weeding along the Waitītiko Meola Creek streamside. Our friends at Whitebait Connection have identified that the section of stream beside the marae is the perfect spawning spot for inanga (one of the 5 native whitebait species). It is just far enough upstream for saltwater to reach at the highest spring tides.
We know inanga are around but the breeding success is limited by the lack of suitable habitat. Whitebait Connection are working with the marae to change that by planting the stream bank in suitable sedges (which look a lot like grasses but aren’t). We’re hoping to remove any weeds to make way for the planting.
Meet outside the marae at 65 Premiere Ave, Pt Chevalier.
Bring your favourite gardening gloves and secateurs if you have them, but we’ll also have spare gear you can borrow. And if you don’t have two hours to spare, drop in for as long as you can manage.
