Hīkoi Waitītiko: Ōwairaka to Rocket Park

Saturday 4 October 2025, 1:00pm - 3:30pm

THIS HIKOI HAS BEEN POSTPOND DUE TO FORECAST RAIN. A NEW DATE WILL BE NOTIFIED SOON. APOLOGIES TO THE TICKETHOLDERS.

Waitītiko / Meola Creek rises on the slopes of Ōwairaka / Mt Albert and flows to 7km to the Waitematā at Te Tokaroa / Meola Reef. Today’s guided walk covers the first third or this distance from the Ōwairaka tihi (summit) to Rocket Park taking in the delightful Roy Clements Treeway. Performer, sculptor, comedian and Iwi advocate Pita Turei (Ngai Tai Ki Tamaki, Ngāti Pāoa, Ngā Rauru Kītahi) will tell some pakiwaitara (Māori stories) along the way, and STEPS will explain their efforts to enhance native biodiversity along the various channels, culverts and tributaries.

The event is FREE but ticketed. Book your tickets here.

Organised and run by SPiCE (Sandringham Project in Community Empowerment) and STEPS (St Lukes Environmental Protection Society)

Gribblehirst Market

Sunday 5 October 2025, 12:00pm - 4:00pm

Join us at the first Gribblehirst Market of spring. We’ll be there promoting community flood resilience. Come along and learn more about your local waterways and flood systems, as well as the role native biodiversity can play in reducing the impacts of flooding. We’ll help you check out the Auckland Council Flood Viewer and advise on how you can be better prepared next time the big rains come.

Ōpoutūkeha / Cox’s Creek Stream Walk

Saturday 11 October 2025, 10:00am - 12:00pm

Ōpoutūkeha / Cox’s Creek awa hīkoi

Join us on this leisurely exploration of the lower reaches of Ōpoutūkeha / Cox’s Creek. We’ll look at the impact of flooding, the work some biodiversity groups are doing to minimise future impact and talk about what you can do to make you and your property more resilient during future rains.

We’ll be hearing how Hakanoa Reserve has been transformed from a little-loved link between Hakanoa and Sackville streets into a delightful, plant-filled suburban haven. Then we’ll discover a regenerating wetland you probably never knew about, on the site of a timber mill that once operated beside Cox’s Creek.

When: Saturday 11 October 10am to noon

Where meet in Hakanoa Reserve: look for the Urban Ark flag. There is limited parking in the area so walk, bus or cycle if you can.

Wear Decent shoes. We’ll be covering some rough ground.

Tickets Free. Get yours here.

Second Sunday Weeders 2025 October: Motions Reserve

Sunday 12 October 2025, 9:00am - 11:00am

This month, Pt Chev’s Second Sunday Weeders will be back at Motions Reserve, an area where we did some “species enrichment” planting in July this year. The plan is to revisit those plants and gently free them from any weeds which are trying to take over. This will give the plants a better chance of surviving through their first summer and contributing to enhanced biodiveristy of the ngahere in years to come. The birds will love the year-round food supply.

  • Meet on the grass beside the trap crossing outside Auckland Zoo (136 Motions Rd)
  • Bring your favourite gardening gloves and secatuers if you have them, but we’ll also have spare gear you can borrow.
  • If you don’t have two hours to spare, but drop in for as long as you can manage.

Sometimes there is cake, often there is good chat, and always there are weeds to pull.

Saturday 18 October 2025, 9:00am - 2:00pm

Join us at the first Mt Albert Community Pop Up of the season. We’ll be there promoting native bioidiverisity and community flood resilience.

If you’re not trapping get a free rat trap (as long as you live in the Urban Ark area (Waterview to Parnell and Westmere to Lynfield). We also have loaner possum traps.

If you’re already trapping, come and grab some fresh supplies and talk trapping techniques

If controlling pest plants is more your thing we can provide weed guides and give you some advice.

We’ll also be promoting community flood resilience. Come along and learn more about your local waterways and flood systems, as well as the role native biodiversity can play in reducing the impacts of flooding. We’ll help you check out the Auckland Council Flood Viewer and advise on how you can be better prepared next time the big rains come.
