White-faced herons (Egretta novaehollandiae) self-introduced from Australia in the 19th century and have only become common around New Zealand since the 1960s.
They’re certainly abundant now, and can be easily seen around the shorelines of inner west Auckland – try Eric Armishaw Reserve, Coyle Park, Meola Reef, Westmere Park and Cox’s Bay. You’ll even see them in open suburban settings such as on playing fields and around reserves.
