South Island Pied Oystercatchers do their breeding in the South Island, but can be found from Cape Reinga to Bluff.
Also known as Tōrea, or Tōrea tuawhenua, the South Island Pied Oystercatchers (SIPO: Haematopus finschiare) congregate near the shorelines of inner west Auckland, particularly in winter when flocks of up to 200 can often be seen. Try Eric Armishaw Reserve, Te Tokaroa (Meola Reef), Seddon Fields and Western Springs Park.
