There are two species of kākāriki found around the Auckland region. None are regularly seen in the inner west of Tāmaki Makaurau.
Red-crowned parakeets (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae) are relatively abundant on Tiritiri Matangi, Rangitoto, Motutapu and in Shakespear Regional Park. Spillover birds have been spotted on Waiheke and we’re still hoping for sightings on the mainland. If you see or hear one, let us know or record your observation on eBird.
Yellow-crowned parakeets (Cyanoramphus auriceps) are found on Hauturu (Little Barrier Island) with occasional vagrants reported on Aotea (Great Barrier Island) and Tiritiri Matangi. Unfortunately, it is unlikely we’ll see any in the inner west anytime soon.
